It is a complete educational and training programme to prepare graduate Physiotherapists who independently can undertake and execute effectively diagnostic and therapeutic management of physical and mental disorders such as cases of Polio, Paralysis, Paraplegia, Hemiplegia and other physical disabilities.
Physiotherapy is a branch of Medicine and third phase of medical care. It can be defined as a science which deals with the methods of treatment through physical agents and other modalities such as; Heat therapy, Hydrotherapy. Shortwave, Microwave, Ultrasonic, Electrical, stimulators, Electrical massagers, Paraffinwax Infra-red rays, Ultraviolet units. Laser Therapy and Tractions etc, on the basis of the knowledge of Human Anatomy and Physiology.
This course is to produce qualified specialists in the field of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation to teach. treat and rehabilitate neurological and orthopaedic disorders of varying degrees and nature and also persons permanently disable by accident and various crippling diseases.
It is estimated that about two crores of the population are neurologically and physically handicapped in the country. But there are a few qualified physiotherapists available. According to report, ratio of therapists and handicapped is 1 : 7500 whereas the standard ratio of world federation is 1: 10. This is indicative of the acute need of the qualified physiotherapists and the wide prospect of the profession and the related courses.
The Government is fast expanding Rehabilitation services in the rural areas.One post of Physiotherapist in every district hospital sub-divisional hospitals and at block hospitals already been created.
